Derek Van Wyk
My name is Derek Van Wyk and I grew up in a Christian home. I went to church and did all the “church stuff” all my life. I never really enjoyed going to church when I lived with my parents, I just went because that’s what I had to do.
When I moved away to college and was able to make my own choices, I never chose to go to church or even read my Bible. Instead I decided to please myself and got myself into a party life style while I was in college.
I met a guy at work named Greg Pollak who asked me the question…if I died today would I go to heaven? I thought I knew the answer and I said, “Well yeah of course I don’t do bad things and I live a pretty good life so why wouldn’t I go to heaven.” He began to explain the gospel to me and we talked for about a month and then I decided it wasn’t the right time for me to get into that stuff because none of my friends were believers and I didn’t want to have to leave them.
I continued with the self-serving life style that I was living until I met Pastor Josh when he worked at Wells Fargo. Josh and I worked across from each other and he asked me spiritual questions and I answered them and this went on for a couple weeks. He asked me to do a bible study and I said I would do it with him. As this Bible study was going on, I started to read the Bible and learn the truth about my life style and what God really wanted for me. I felt empty inside and was tired of living for myself.
On October 26, 2007 I accepted Jesus Christ into my life and started to turn my life around and live for Jesus. Since that day it’s been a journey and a learning experience that I wouldn’t change for the world.
